Updates and Public Statement
A great article in this week's in newsweekly. Here's the text of my latest public statement:
PUBLIC STATEMENT by Mark Binder, candidate for US House of Representatives, Rhode Island District 1:
If there's one thing that the 2000 election proved, it's that every single vote counts. Of course, I'd like you to vote for me, but even if you don't plan on it, your vote can influence the course of local and national history.
Why vote for Mark Binder?
1) I will push for a quick resolution of the Iraq war no matter who is President. I will not support a four-year withdrawal from Iraq as a starting point of our foreign policy.
2) I will introduce legislation to create a plan for eliminating US dependence on fossil fuels by 2020. This may require an overhaul or change of focus for the Department of Energy. This will require the political will of leaders, not business-as-usual politicians. If our country puts its money, energy and innovation behind this effort, do you doubt we will succeed? Eliminating fossil fuel dependence by 2020 will:
- increase security
- improve science education opportunities and funding
- clean up the environment
- create new industries at home to counter industries that have gone abroad
3) I will vote fund initiatives like No Child Left Behind -- or vote them down. The future of our children is too important to be left to slogans.
4) I will vote to ban advertising for prescription drugs on television. I will vote to allow Medicare to bargain with drug companies. Meanwhile, I will vote to allow the import of Canadian pharmaceuticals.
5) I will vote to scale down the war on terror, to repeal the Patriot Act, and REQUIRE the president to abide by the constitution that requires Congressional approval for war, and Congressional determination of prisoners of war.
6) If nominated, I will defeat any Republican or Independent challengers. I will work with the Democratic Party in Rhode Island to insure that the Republicans don't win. And yes, I will begin high-speed fundraising, as much as I may not look forward to it.
It's time for Rhode Island to have a representative who understands what it's like to raise a family, go to the drug store, and work for a living. It's time for the United States to have leaders who are willing to stand firmly for peace and vote against the use of violence as foreign policy.
Vote for me on September 14, and please invite 10 or more people you know to vote for me.
- Mark Binder, Democrat for US House of Representatives, RI First Congressional District
